Entrepreneurship programme to empower young women

MUSCAT -- Aiming to encourage young Omanis to consider the exciting opportunities and unlimited possibilities that entrepreneurship offers, AMIDEASTAMIDEASTLoading... conducted an "Entrepreneurial Awareness Program" (EAP) from July 17-August 5, funded by the Embassy of the Netherlands for 14 graduates of the "Empowering Omani Women" and "Empowering Girls in Oman" programmes which were also funded by the embassy.

The programme aimed to enable the participants to think seriously about their own entrepreneurial potential, define their skill sets and interests, translate them into a marketable business, think creatively about ways to pursue business interests within the context of their other obligations and understand the essential components of a successful business.

The programme will empower young women to think in innovative ways, give them basic business skills training to better understand the essential components of successful self-employment, and provide them with a practical post-programme support network. The intensive three-week training programme, was in Arabic and included an awareness component, 14 days of training in basic business skills and 1 day computer skills training.

The programme was conducted by Omani instructor, Ali al Sharji, an entrepreneur who has conducted training for "Injaz Arabia" (Junior Achievement), a Shell-sponsored entrepreneurship programme and an EAP course that was conducted by AMIDEASTAMIDEASTLoading... in July 2009 for low-income girls who are between their 11th and 12th years of school with the National Centre for Career Guidance under the Ministry of Education.

"This programme helped me to know how to start a new business and especially how to deal with customers and solve their problems. Also we went through Sales and Accounting", said Maryam al Lawati, one of the participants in the programme.

Riham al Mudaini, another participant added, "The most important thing I learned in this programme is how to be a hard worker and achieve my goal and start my own business".

Kalimat al Mashari, who already started her own business after she graduated from "Empowering Omani Women" in AMIDEASTAMIDEASTLoading... last year, joined this programme and said: "This program gave me the courage and self-esteem I needed to run my business successfully. Now, I know how to do an annual plan and feasibility study".
