Greeks detect hypocrisy as Dutch coalition stumbles

(Reuters) - For months Dutch Finance Minister Jan Kees de Jager has subjected Athens to regular dressings-down on the dire state of its finances. Now, with his coalition brought to its knees by a row over budget cuts, Greeks may detect a whiff of hypocrisy.
Even by the standards of the blunt-talking Dutch, De Jager hasn't minced his words in demanding that Greek leaders submit to EU demands for punitive austerity measures - or forget about getting any help to avoid bankruptcy.
FREE GUIDES AND REPORTS FROM DIANOMIADVERTISEMENTSo blunt were some of his comments that he helped to provoke a response from the Greek head of state, who normally stays above the rough and tumble of daily politics. "Who are the Dutch?" asked an angry President Karolos Papoulias in February.
Monday's resignation of the Dutch coalition over a failure to agree on budget cuts which are modest compared with those endured by Greeks aroused no sympathy in Athens.
"This serves the Dutch right. They haven't understood that the crisis is pretty much hitting the whole of Europe, not just Greece," said Nikos Karagiannis, 32, a state employee whose pay has been cut 40 percent under the austerity regime.
The problems of the Netherlands, one of the euro zone's strongest economies and most stable democracies, are minor compared with those of Greece, which is suffering the fifth year of what some politicians call a depression.
De Jager himself dismissed any thought that the Dutch crisis put his country in the same league as Europe's sick economies. "There is no correlation whatsoever between the Netherlands and the countries of southern Europe," he told Reuters on Monday.
Dutch state debt is about 65 percent of annual economic output, he noted. Greece, by contrast, hopes to cut its debts to almost twice that by 2020 from 165.3 percent last year.
The Dutch row is over whether to cut the budget deficit to the EU target of three percent of GDP next year. For Greece, such levels are only a dream: last year Athens got its deficit down to 9.1 percent, but only after cuts which have helped to send unemployment to record levels.
POWERFUL COMMISSAR
De Jager, a short, plump figure who looks younger than his years, has rarely held back in saying that European countries in trouble will have to accept greater oversight of their budgets.
"You can't solve a debt crisis with more money, that is the lesson from this crisis," the 43-year-old minister said last year. "You need more tools, you need budget oversight."
Only last year De Jager and Prime Minister Mark Rutte - who offered the cabinet's resignation after a party it relies for support on refused to back the austerity cuts - proposed an EU budget authority run by a powerful commissioner.
This could intervene in government budgets if countries ignored debt targets, gradually taking over their finances and potentially expelling them from the euro zone.
Greek conservative leader Antonis Samaras, a frontrunner to become prime minister after the May 6 election, dared to question whether policies which have destroyed economic growth might be modified.
This drew another lecture from De Jager, who backed in blunt terms an EU demand that Greek leaders make written undertakings on implementing austerity laid down in a 130 billion euro bailout deal. Words were not enough, he said.
"We have passed that stage. We want a signature from this Mr. Samaras," De Jager told RTL. "Otherwise they won't get money, absolutely not."
Nevertheless, while the Netherlands enters a dangerous period of uncertainty, Greece is enjoying at least a temporary period of relative calm following several years of turmoil.
Greece's national unity government is due to step aside after elections next month having achieved its aims of passing a 2012 austerity budget, pushing through a bond swap to reduce its debts, and securing the bailout from the European Union and IMF.
Many Greeks feel critics like De Jager are dangerously out of touch in a crisis which threatens the entire euro zone. "I think there's a possibility that the euro will break down," said Karagiannis. "It seems the Dutch and others don't get it."
The comments hurt. "I don't care what happens to the Dutch," said the owner of an Athens coffee shop who declined to be named. "What really bothers me is that all politicians in the big European powers are saying vote for me so that you don't end up like Greece," he said, adding that his sales had dropped 50 percent and taxes almost doubled under the austerity regime.
De Jager, an entrepreneur from the Christian Democrat party, in fact doesn't hold back from predicting dire trouble, albeit with the blame beyond Dutch borders.
"If Greece falls, many European banks will fall as well," he tweeted in March 2010 as acting finance minister. "All hell will break loose if there is another crisis," he said on Twitter, drawing fire in parliament.

(Reuters) - A former BP Plc engineer was arrested and charged with trying to destroy evidence related to how much oil was spilling from the broken well in the Gulf of Mexico in April of 2010, the U.S. Justice Department said.
Kurt Mix, 50, was accused of trying to delete text messages between him and a supervisor that included "sensitive internal BP information collected in real-time" as BP tried to cap the well, the Justice Department said.
He was charged with two counts of obstruction of justice.

Remember that David Wilcock, in the Drake interview and his transcript of that interview, pointed out how some folks often look at any idea or article or evidence that says, “‘Good’ things really are happening for us… now!!” And then think or say or write, “That MUST be wrong.” No matter what it is, and no matter any evidence to the contrary. A completely negative, dark view like that, in my mind, simply assists the dark (the shadows) in hanging around just a little bit longer. Personally, I have no time for such views, and have no time for such people in my consciousness space.
So looking at what those “negative view of it all” folks often say, I felt this message from the Bix was appropriate to post.

It was supposed to be in the Friday Road Trip but I have clearly missed my own deadline. Should be out early next week.
But what I am coming across is a plethora of articles lately slamming the Conspiracy Theories and telling people to “give up the ghost” and wake up to the reality that we are 100% screwed no matter what happens. They claim that facing the reality of poverty, death and destruction is the only honest way to see the future and to “grow up and deal with it”.
So here’s what I have to say them…PROVE IT!
Prove that there isn’t a group of Good Guys working to take down the Banking Cabal. Prove that we are not about to return to a Gold Standard. Prove that our future is not full of hope and recovery. Prove the we are wasting our time and energy putting faith in the likes of Drake, Fulford, Wilcock and Roota!
That’s what the world made me do when I first discovered there was a plan to end the reign of the Banking Cabal! I spent the last 10 years PROVING IT and I’ve come up with mountains of evidence and connections:

Those who created these you perceive as the dark ones as they pertain to our discussion created them from greed and selfishness and breathed into them not Love, not Sourced Consciousness, but an artificial power source– comparable in your realm perhaps to that which powers even the most intelligent of your machines. Just as it is with any computer, no ability for independent creation was given, and so its intelligence, which grew over millions of years, this force must ever seek new ways to power itself for its own existence, as its creators could no longer contain it and decided to disconnect its [original] power supply. It was during this battle that such forces calculated how they could perpetuate their own existence. The calculations showed that by binding it to humanity through artificial constructs and power grids connected to manipulated DNA in humans and other beings who carry God-Spark, it could continue its existence. This is how lower forces came to dominate the Earth.
Think of the mega matrix as the grid system. Think of DNA as the receivers of command. When the grid, which requires constant power to run needs greater energy, it sends signals to the receivers implanted in humanity to cause fear– an animal emotion– not a Divine E-Motion– to power its grid, which is the fuel of its conquests throughout the galaxy.

(Reuters) - A phone-hacking scandal that has rocked Rupert Murdoch's media empire piled more pressure on British Prime Minister David Cameron on Tuesday with the revelation that one of his ministers gave News Corp executives highly sensitive details to help a controversial merger.LONDON
As the Leveson Inquiry on press ethics began to delve into the relationships between politicians and the media, with James Murdoch as a witness, the court heard that Jeremy Hunt, the culture minister, had had numerous secret contacts with James and his top London lobbyist.
Within minutes of the Leveson Inquiry's closing for the day, opposition politicians were lining up to call for the resignation of Hunt, previously seen as a rising star in Conservative Prime Minister Cameron's government.
"Now we know he was providing advice, guidance and privileged access to News Corporation, he was being a back channel for the Murdochs," Ed Miliband, leader of the opposition Labour party, told Sky News.
"If he refuses to resign, the prime minister must show some leadership and fire him," said Miliband, who boosted his credibility last year by galvanising opposition to Murdoch.
The inquiry was reluctantly ordered by Cameron last July as a phone-hacking scandal at Murdoch's News of the World tabloid spiralled out of control, forcing him to side against the media empire that had helped propel him into power a year earlier.
News Corp eventually dropped its $12 billion (7.4 billion pounds) bid for the highly profitable BSkyB as public opposition to Murdoch made it untenable.
Hunt denied being a "cheerleader" for the Murdochs, as prosecutor Robert Jay suggested to James Murdoch at the inquiry on Tuesday and said he would not quit.
"Now is not a time for kneejerk reactions. We've heard one side of the story today but some of the evidence reported meetings and conversations that simply didn't happen," Hunt said in a statement.
He had written to the Leveson inquiry, asking if his planned appearance could be brought forward.
"I am very confident that when I present my evidence the public will see that I conducted this process with scrupulous fairness," he said.
Cameron's spokesman sent a text message to Reuters saying the prime minister still had "full confidence" in Hunt.
Tuesday's revelations are a blow for Cameron's Conservative government, which has been dropping in opinion polls due to a series of blunders including a so-called "granny tax" on pensioners and a failed attempt to extradite a terror suspect.
Hunt took over responsibility for deciding whether to approve the BSkyB bid after the minister previously in charge, Liberal Democrat Vince Cable, was secretly recorded saying he had "declared war" on Murdoch.
News Corp had already been lobbying Hunt, a Conservative, as it tried to build political support for its long-held ambition to buy BSkyB, Britain's dominant pay-TV operator, which Rupert Murdoch had helped build from the ground up.
"Hunt acted as a back channel for News Corp when Vince Cable had responsibility for the deal and then allowed extensive confidential and secret briefings to take place on what should have been a quasi judicial process," said Evan Harris, a former Liberal Democrat MP who had lobbied for a media inquiry.
CONFIDENTIAL STATEMENTS
Public opposition to the News Corp-BSkyB deal grew last year as the phone-hacking scandal escalated with the revelation that murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler's phone had been hacked, raising concerns about the extent of Murdoch's media ownership.
Murdoch's News Corp owns the Times of London and Sunday Times national broadsheets, Britain's top-selling tabloid the Sun, and 39 percent of BSkyB, which has an influential 24-hour news channel.
The media conglomerate, which also owns Fox News, the 20th Century Fox movie studio and the Wall Street Journal, abruptly shut down the 168-year-old News of the World to try to contain the scandal last July and dropped its bid for BSkyB.
At Tuesday's Leveson Inquiry hearing at London's Royal Courts of Justice, email correspondence between James Murdoch and lobbyist Frederic Michel was read out, showing the level of privileged access that Murdoch's company had to Hunt and others.
Prosecutor Jay read out a series of emails, asking Murdoch to comment, including one that referred to a confidential statement that Hunt was due to read in parliament the following day.
"Mr Michel to you: 'Confidential: JH Statement. Managed to get some info on the plans for tomorrow. (Absolutely illegal),'" Jay read. "What do you make of that?" he asked Murdoch to an audible gasp in the packed courtroom.
Murdoch replied: "I thought it was a joke."
Veteran Scottish National Party leader Alex Salmond, whom Rupert Murdoch has praised on Twitter, also offered help with the BSkyB bid, the court heard.
Murdoch at first looked nervous, repeatedly clenching and flexing his fists and fiddling with his tie as he waited for Judge Brian Leveson to appear.
He appeared to get more confident as the hearing went on, however, and at times looked impatient with the line of questioning, even rolling his eyes on occasion.
Murdoch, who is deputy chief operating officer of News Corp based in New York, denied he had used the political influence wielded by his father's newspapers, which have destroyed numerous political careers, to steer through the takeover.
He acknowledged he had discussed plans for the takeover with Cameron at a private dinner, but said in general he left politics to his father and Rebekah Brooks, the powerful News of the World editor who resigned last year.
And he again blamed underlings - in particular then-editor Colin Myler who is now at the New York Daily News and lawyer Tom Crone - for failing to alert him to the extent of the wrongdoing when he was chairman of the newspaper's publishing company.
"Knowing what we know now about the culture at the News of the World ... then it must have been cavalier about risk and that is a matter of huge regret," he told the packed court room.
Murdoch said he had not been sufficiently in touch with the culture at the tabloids to question subordinates.
Asked if he even read the News of the World, he said: "I couldn't say I read all of it".
"I wasn't in the business of deciding what to put in the newspapers," he said.
Media consultant Steve Hewlett said: "His lack of engagement with the nuts and bolts of what the business was actually about - i.e. journalism and content - is quite remarkable. I'm not saying it's not genuine but it's quite remarkable."
James Murdoch's brother Lachlan and his wife Kathryn were in court to support James.
Lachlan told Reuters at the end of the day: "I'm no lawyer but I'm very proud of my brother."

Where SOPA, the previous big-deal bill regarding the Internet, would have given the US federal government enormous powers to remove sites from the Internet, CISPA would grant the US federal government the power to spy on just about everything that happens over the Internet. This would be allowed without any oversight, such as needing a warrant before performing a search, and is a direct violation of the 4th Amendment of the US Constitution.

The imminent mass arrests will be of those persons who have perpetrated upon the American people all the ills disclosed in the article listed below. We need to be supportive and do all we can to assist in preventing any violence as Americans react in fear and anger upon learning how thoroughly they have been enslaved by the private owners of the Federal Reserve and their henchmen.
A sufficient number of people in a majority of the states have taken the necessary legal steps to free America from Corporate Rule and sent the paperwork to the International Court of Law in Hague, Netherlands. They have received the necessary Notification Process from the International Court to permit We the People to request the United States Military to ask the Federal Marshalls, with the backing of the local police, to arrest those who usurped our original Constitution and created the United States of America, Inc. and enslaved the people. The military will assist by standing guard in case there is more trouble than the Federal Marshalls and police can handle.
The imminent mass arrests in America will take place at the request of We the People.
